The supposed rules as to what we can or can’t wear depending on our body type are endless; don’t wear horizontal stripes if you’re curvy, only wear a bikini if you’re a size ten or below, don’t wear a miniskirt unless you have thigh gap.

Now, the #WeWearWhatWeWant hashtag is breaking down those rules which are, quite frankly, absolute rubbish.

Started by Simone Mariposa, a 23-year-old plus-sized blogger, the hashtag encourages plus-sized women to share photos of themselves wearing whatever the hell they want.

And it’s recently exploded on Twitter, with women from all over sharing photos of themselves wearing whatever they want to - especially the items that society says they shouldn’t be allowed to.

Mariposa started the hashtag after seeing a story about a plus-sized woman who was criticised for her fashion choices.

Mariposa told Buzzfeed that when people are ridiculed for wearing certain clothes it “can take a big toll on one’s self-esteem”:

“My body image suffered greatly from it. I stopped wearing my legs and arms out, I stayed away from clothes that accentuated my belly fat, and I was extremely self conscious [in] public.

“However, after a while, I stopped letting society dictate my wardrobe, and starting wearing things that I always dreamed of wearing that made me feel beautiful.”

The hashtag has now transformed from the occasional tweet into an entire body-positive Twitter community.
