‘Women Don’t Stop at a Size 12,’ Says Melissa McCarthy, So Why Would Her Line?

It’s no secret that clothing for all shapes and sizes can be hard to come by. Many brands simply end their sizes at a size 12, forcing women to shop in stores that specifically carry larger items, greatly reducing their options for outfits. While this sad “normal” has simply gone unchallenged in previous years, Melissa McCarthy said she has had enough of it.

“I’ve been every size in the world, but after I was a size 12, it was, like, apparently I’m ‘done’ dressing,” the 45-year-old Ghostbusters star told Chelsea Handler when asked about her fashion line. “My line is all sizes because I was like, ‘Women don’t stop — I don’t know why I would stop at a certain size; that seems odd to me.”

Sounds like common sense, right? Women’s body types don’t simply end at a size 12, and Melissa is clearly fed up with people pigeonholing women into only wearing cuts and colors solely based on their size.

Recently, more and more women are unabashedly coming forward to speak out against the unfairness and insensitivity displayed by clothing brands. Most recently, ASOS was criticized by consumers for using the phrase “plus size” in an Instagram post of a model who many viewers believed shouldn’t have been noted as such, prompting an intense social media debate.

That’s not all. Ashley Graham has been known to speak out on social media against the unfair assumptions associated with being a plus-size person. For example, Graham said earlier this month that cellulite isn’t just something that plus-size women have, but rather something that pretty much everyone — no matter what your shape or size — has during their lifetime. Knowing this, Ashley makes a good case for the fact that cellulite should be accepted as normal rather than viewed as a flaw, and that plus-size women are just as sexy and desirable as anyone else.

Overall, each of these instances is just another example of why it’s important for brands to offer a variety of choices for all women — regardless of their size or shape. Hopefully more brands will follow Melissa’s standard of inclusion in their own clothing lines.
