For some, haircuts – and the maintenance that comes with shorter lengths – are a regular occurrence (it's me, hi, I'm the haircut addict, it's me). But for others, understandably, chopping off their lengthly tresses can be a big commitment, particularly if it's as short of a cut as a bob. And so, if you're included in the latter masses (or if you're just here to swot up on your knowledge), fear not, for we've unpacked everything you need to know about getting a bob haircut and whether or not the style will suit your particular face shape.

To get the 411, Cosmopolitan UK spoke with professional hairstylist and GHD ambassador, Samantha Cusick who answered some of our burning bob questions and shared her tips on everything that comes with getting the cut.

Will a bob haircut suit my face shape?

A bob is such a versatile cut and can suit lots of different people, including those with oval, round, square and heart-shaped faces. However, as it goes, certain styles work better than others, Samantha shares. She explains more, below:

Oval

"This face shape is super balanced, so pretty much any bob will look great. You can play around with different lengths and textures for variety."

Round

"If you want to elongate your face, a longer bob (lob) is a great option. You could also try an angled bob to create height at the crown for a more lengthened look."

Square

"To soften stronger features, go for a soft, textured bob—this will help add some softness and movement to the face."

What is the 2.5/5.5cm chin-to-neck length rule?

Neck length, chin width and the ratio between the two are all factors to consider when getting a bob haircut. The most common rule regarding this states that if your chin is less than 2.25 inches from the tip of your earlobe, then short hairstyles are for you.

"This '2.25 inches' or '5.5cm' rule is a guide to help create balance and proportion when it comes to bob haircuts," Samatha says. "It’s about measuring from the chin to the neck to work out what length is going to be the most flattering based on your facial structure and neck length. It’s a little trick that can make all the difference!"

Does body and face size matter when getting a bob?

When searching 'bob haircut' online, there are a number of suggested terms and phrases generated. Among them include: 'Does a haircut make you look younger or older,' 'will a bob suit me' and 'will a bob make my face look fatter.' So, what's the deal?

Samatha says that these are definitely considerations, but there really is a bob variation for everyone. "It’s all about balance and making sure the haircut complements your features. For example, if you have more angular features, a softer, layered bob can help balance that out. The length and volume of your bob should also suit your body shape. If you’re petite, a shorter bob can add structure without overpowering your frame."

How to style a bob haircut

The right hair tool can change the game when it comes to styling your lengths. Samantha recommends the ghd Mini Styler; "It’s perfect for styling bobs," she says, adding that "when you’re styling, use a brush or comb to slightly bevel the ends and give your bob that beautiful shape and finish."

First-time bob'er tips

If you're getting a bob haircut for the first time, communication with your stylist is key. Here's what Samantha says you should ask for:

Length

"Be clear about how long (or short) you want your bob. Whether you want it at jawline length or something that sits closer to the shoulders, make sure you know what you’re comfortable with."

Layers

"Decide if you want layers or not. Layers can give your bob some texture and movement, but think about your hair type and how much styling you’re up for."

Texture

"Mention if you prefer a sleek, smooth bob or a more textured, tousled finish. It’s all about what suits your style."

Fringe or nah?

"Do you want bangs or no bangs? They can totally change the look of a bob, whether blunt, side-swept, or none at all—it’s good to discuss this with your stylist."

Maintenance

"Be honest about how much time you want to spend on styling. Some bobs are low-maintenance, while others might need more effort in the mornings. Go for a cut that fits your lifestyle."

Photos

"If you’ve got inspiration pics, take them with you. It’s always easier for your stylist to know exactly what vibe you’re going for when they can see it."

Styling tips

"Don’t forget to ask for tips on styling your new bob at home. Your stylist can recommend products and techniques to keep your bob looking fresh and fabulous."
