This is the surname Prince George will be using at school

Who didn’t Aww at the pictures of Prince George starting school for the very first time? But as his royal cuteness settles into school life people have been wondering what name the four-year-old answer to when his teacher calls out the register.

The tot’s full title is Prince George of Cambridge, but seeing as that’s a bit of a mouthful for his classmates, the Guardian is reporting that he’ll be going by the name George Cambridge.

And this was seemingly confirmed by one eagle-eyed Twitter user who spotted the name tag on Prince George’s bag as he was pictured walking into Thomas’s Battersea on his first day.

“Good to see George Cambridge has his bag clearly labelled for his first day of school,” Elliot Wagland, head of pictures at London Evening Standard, tweeted alongside a close up picture of the label on George’s navy backpack which read “George Cambridge”.

But this has lead to some confusion because the royal website states that unless rules change grandchildren of the Prince of Wales ie Prince George will be known as Mountbatten-Windsor.

“People often ask whether members of the Royal Family have a surname, and, if so, what it is,” the royal website states.

“Members of the Royal Family can be known both by the name of the Royal house, and by a surname, which are not always the same. And often they do not use a surname at all.”

The website goes on to explain that: “For the most part, members of the Royal Family who are entitled to the style and dignity of HRH Prince or Princess do not need a surname, but if at any time any of them do need a surname (such as upon marriage), that surname is Mountbatten-Windsor.”

“Unless The Prince of Wales chooses to alter the present decisions when he becomes king, he will continue to be of the House of Windsor and his grandchildren will use the surname Mountbatten-Windsor.”

However, though that is technically the royal family’s last name, it’s rarely the one members of the family use in everyday life. During their own school days Prince William and Prince Harry went by the names William Wales and Harry Wales as an homage to their father’s Prince of Wales title.

But now that William now has a title of his own: Duke of Cambridge, just as William took his own last name from his father’s title, so will George, hence the George Cambridge label on his little backpack, bless.

His official surname isn’t the only detail that has emerged about Prince George’s school life, we’ve also discovered a little about what the young prince will be eating. And turns out school dinners have come a long way from soggy fish fingers and treacle pudding. Well at Thomas’s Battersea anyway.

Morning snacks include organic milk, freshly baked pain aux raisins and wholewheat breadsticks. But lunch is really where the school comes into it’s own.

Forget luke-warm chicken nuggets and chips, according to Town & Country magazine, Prince George will be able to choose from a freshly-cooked seasonal menu specially designed by a nutritionist.

Not only is there a salad bar every day, but children are also given the opportunity to design their own lunch from a menu that lists lamb ragout with garlic and fresh herbs and turkey and ham pie with puff pastry as being amongst the options.

When it comes to pudding, the young Prince can choose from dessert delights like steamed jam and coconut sponge cake with organic custard or oven-baked oatmeal and raisin cookies served with banana milkshakes.

It’s making us hungry just thinking about it.
