Mary, Mary, not so hairy, how does your lady garden grow?
We hear it all over, the call of the wild bush. “Trim me,” it says, “even just a little bit”. Although those of us that do all have our motives, a recent study in the good ol’ US of A aimed to find out exactly what those motive are.
The study published by The JAMA Network was drawn from a sample of over 3000 women divided by age into 5 groups (18-24, 25-34, 35-44, 45-54 and 55-65). Although a lot of the results are far from surprising, the ‘most likely to’ demographic pointed the razor at young, white educated women of a higher income. But despite the increased wages, 92% of women said they groomed themselves with 8% preferring their partner to wield the razor and a comparatively meagre 6% preferring the professional touch.
So do the older, more ethnically diverse ladies of the states know something we don’t or is it more every girl at uni wants her muff looking buff? According to the study, over half of the women surveyed (55.6%) said they do it for the sex with another 40% admitting to trimming for vacations and health care visits.
59% of those surveyed cited hygienic routine as their main motivation for grooming whereas another 31.5% said it made their privates prettier and a further 21% said they did it for their partners. Interestingly, although probably not a direct correlation, the groomers reported twice the average number of lifetime partners as the non-groomers and were significantly more likely to have sex and engage in “active and receptive oral sex”. What’s more, it went pretty in depth about the particulars of the ritual…

Those claiming it’s all in the name of hygiene may be half right as this article from 2013 shows, a sexual health clinic in Sydney, Australia hasn’t seen a case of pubic lice since 2008. However, another study stateside saw that between 2002-2010, the number of patients admitted to A&E due to shaving mishaps increased fivefold! Add that to the fact that a close shave coupled with a hot, moist environment can lead to rashes and infections, maybe the safest course of action is to just steer clear, or at least trim rather than remove.
