A strapless jacket has landed on ASOS and we have questions

Living in the UK, we face the daily conundrum of dressing for the weather.

Am I going to be too hot, even though it’s November? Am I going to be too cold, even though it’s August? And of course, am I going to get wet, even though it’s 25 degrees outside?

Well it seems ASOS and River Island are fed up with the whole conversation, so they’ve designed a jacket – yes, it’s definitely a white denim jacket – as well as being a strap top. WIN WIN. No?

You’d think we’d be jumping for joy at this miraculous piece of innovative fashion, when in reality, we’re actually very confused.

Essentially, they’ve updated the good old 90’s look of tying your jacket around your waist. It’s tried and tested, looks great (as long as you’re not a dad in Merrells) and is also very practical; you are wonderfully prepared for the cold spell that is about to ruin a sunny day.

But instead of tying a jumper around your waist, ASOS and River Island have created a top that ties around your mid-drift while you’re still wearing it – a bit like you do with a dressing gown when you’re too hot and need to cool off in the bathroom.

To be clear, this isn’t just a denim jacket that you then have to figure out how to tie, and it’s not a denim jacket you can then stop wearing tied around your middle. It’s sold already tied, so you’re very committed to having cold shoulders but a warm stomach. Maybe that’s the perfect combo?

We’re not entirely convinced, and worry you might get some funny looks from older ladies shaking their heads at the youth of today.

We’re also slightly worried that you might have a nip slip situation on your hands. A handy jacket is the perfect solution to these fashion misdemeanours, but yours is sewn tightly onto you, completely superfluous and actually rather annoying.

Instagram is with us on this one, and hilarious comments like ‘Karen had never worn a jacket before…’ have been popping up on spoof pages.

Retailing at £35, the jacket won’t break the bank, but we recommend trialing this new look on an old jumper before you purchase, and if you do, keep an eye on the weather, because that jacket/ top/ jacket/ top (!?) is not going to save you.
