Strangers Step In To Save Couple’s Wedding Day Destroyed By Flooding

It’s considered lucky for it to rain on your wedding day, but when Alyce Corbutt and Matt Bookless learnt the devastating news that their wedding reception venue had been flooded the last thing they were feeling was lucky.
The wedding had been 12 months in the planning with the couple preparing to celebrate their nuptials on a hill at Alyce’s parents farm. But heavy rain across Queensland meant the plans had to be completely altered with just a few hours notice.
On the morning of the big day, the couple’s wedding planner and some other close friends had gone to the reception venue to help set up and decorate the marquee. But as the rain continued to pour, the road in and out of the farm became completely flooded, trapping guests already there and deeming the venue unusable.

“I was pretty determined we weren’t going to let rain ruin our wedding, it didn’t matter where it was, all that mattered is that we are surrounded by our friends and family,” Alyce explained.
“I’d been checking the weather report hourly from a week leading out and I think we’d even been promised abundant sunshine at one stage, but it turned out to be anything but.”
Determined that the wedding not be postponed, Alyce’s sister contacted a local radio station to put out the word and see if anyone was able to do anything.
Luckily the cry for help reached Marcus Sullivan, general manager at nearby Arundel Hills Country Club and he stepped forward to offer an alternative venue for the couple to enjoy their reception. Mr Sullivan said a whole host of other local businesses combined to get the venue ready in time and the wedding was able to go to ahead as planned at the eleventh hour.

Sharing an image of the newlyweds to his Instagram, the couple’s photographer, Tom Hall, described how rain certainly didn’t stop play when it came to tying the duo knot.
“Yesterday’s wedding was proof that if love is the motivation for marriage then nothing can take away from it - not even floods, a sudden change in ceremony location and reception venue (to another state) and the worst weather imaginable,” he wrote.
“I was floored by Matt and Alyce’s grace! I think the fact that they’re so besotted with each other made having to get married in the lounge room of an apartment seem like it was the plan all along!” he continued.
“What a classy couple! I’m so happy that for the rest of their lives they get to look back on their wedding day and remember that regardless of what happened they wholeheartedly enjoyed every second!”
