Stella McCartney debuts bridalwear for women of all ages
Given the popularity of the Stella McCartney wedding dress that the Duchess of Sussex wore at her bridal reception, it's no surprise that the British brand has finally launched a dedicated collection for brides-to-be.
In true, Stella style this is an offering for modern women who want to feel elegant, comfortable and, most importantly, the best, chicest version of themselves. There's a Bianca Jagger-inspired white trouser suit, as well as sweeping caped dresses and understated floor-length styles with long-sleeves. And, of course, there's the halter-neck gown that the Duchess of Sussex made famous back in May.
“When I designed this collection I took some of the classic Stella McCartney pieces and re-looked at them and re-energised them with the spirit that is now in the future of wedding; the modern bride’s approach to her dress," McCartney told us.
"I wanted to design pieces that would be comfortable and special and have such an emotional attachment, but wouldn’t really make you feel like you weren’t yourself."
Each look comes with a blue tag with a personal message from McCartney to represent "something blue" as well as "something new". As is the brand's long-standing ethos, the collect is sustainably made and pieces are created in Italian factories in Puglia, Abruzzo and Marche. In-store appointments can be made online.
Important to the designer was the notion of making wedding gowns that will suit all ages, from twenty-somethings to women in their 50s.
“The collection really reflects different ages," she said. "I think at Stella McCartney so many different women come to us of so many different ages that I really wanted to have that in the collection as well, that you can be any kind of bride if you come to the Stella McCartney wedding collection; it is truly made with love.”
An estimated 1.9 billion people watched the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in May. The Duchess wore Givenchy to the ceremony, but switched to Stella McCartney that evening for her reception.
"I think Meghan chose me for reasons other than just a beautiful dress - plenty of people can do that. She is not a difficult client to make look beautiful," McCartney told Elle in August. "Amal called me and asked me to do it, as did Oprah. I look at that Amal dress, and it is made of sustainable viscose that took us three years to develop.
“Obviously I am a British designer, but I think being a woman and being a women’s woman played a part. They are all women’s women. It’s a big deal.”
