Is this sparkling wine the new prosecco?
Forget prosecco for one moment, as there’s a new bubbly to add to your shopping basket this weekend.
Crémant has gained serious popularity in recent months, as figures from the Wine and Spirit Trade Association (WTSA) indicate that 3.7 million bottles of the French must-have were sold in the UK last year.
While sales of the sparkling wine shot up by 28 percent in Waitrose, boozy heavyweight Majestic reported a 16 percent sales increase of crémant. And Valentine’s Day proved a serious push for the French wine, as couples shunned prosecco in favour of the old favourite.
But what’s causing the spark in interest?
Rebecca Hull, champagne and sparkling wine buyer at Waitrose, told The Telegraph, “Traditionally, sparkling wines and Champagne were seen as the drink for special occasions, but now it’s proving popular all year round thanks to fizz fans looking for a wider range of sparkling wines that are not only great quality, but affordable too.”
“Crémant is a great alternative as it’s well-priced and well-made. The fizz is made using the traditional Champagne method and over the last few month’s it has been steadily increasing in popularity with sales up 72 per cent last year versus 2016, and sales up 28 per cent so far this year, with crémant proving particularly popular over Valentine’s Day.”
In order to meet increased demand, Waitrose has upped its game with a whole range of sparkling wines starting from just £8.99.
And it’s bound to be a sure-fire hit, as over 120 million bottles of sparkling wines were sold across British supermarkets in 2017 making last year a huge hit for the fizz industry.
So when stocking up this weekend, make sure to check out the wine aisles before this fizz proves a sell-out.
