Singer Grimes says she won't gender her child
Canadian singer-songwriter Grimes, who is due to give birth in the spring, says that she won't reveal the child's gender and that so far, the name she's chosen hasn't proved popular. In the past she has been linked to tech entrepreneur and Tesla founder, Elon Musk, but it's unconfirmed whether or not he is the father.
During a YouTube live stream, Grimes (whose real name is Claire Elise Boucher) shared that she'll be allowing her firstborn to decide their own gender as they get older. “I don’t want to say the gender of the baby... I feel like their privacy should be protected,” she said. “I don’t think they can consent to being famous or being in public. I don’t want to gender them in case that’s not how they feel in their life. I don’t know, I just feel like it doesn’t need to be known."
She also echoed those sentiments in a tweet saying "They may decide their fate and identity", when asked by a fan "Will you have a girl or a boy?", during an open Q&A session on the social media site.
Grimes, 31, has been open about her pregnancy not only with her fans on social media, but in interviews too, recently telling The Face how she feels physically. "I get tired way more easily and feel like I have much less to give. But it seems like an appropriate price to pay for manifesting a human soul. I’d be concerned if they weren’t taking a substantial portion of my life-force."
On the subject of names, Grimes, who reportedly changed her own to a lowercase 'c' (the measurement for the speed of light in a vacuum) said, “I have a name for the baby, but I don’t want to say what it is because everyone I’ve told it hates it, and everyone’s gonna make fun of it," before adding that she feels the name is just too ahead of its time. “But it is, in fact, a genius name and people just don’t appreciate it yet because it’s too avant-garde.”
We hope that her baby is happy and healthy, regardless of whether or not she decides to share their gender (or indeed assign them one).
