Rose McGowan criticises actresses planning to wear black at Golden Globes

On Friday, news hit that several well-known actresses were planning to wear black at the 2018 Golden Globes.

Female attendees at January’s star-studded awards ceremony were reportedly asking their stylists to find them black gowns in order to protest the sexual harassment that has been ongoing in the entertainment industry for decades.

The likes of Meryl Streep, Jessica Chastain and Emma Stone were believed to be participating.

But one victim, actress Rose McGowan, has said the protest will make “no real change.”

In a now deleted tweet, the 44-year-old wrote: “Actresses, like Meryl Streep, who happily worked for The Pig Monster, are wearing black @GoldenGlobes in a silent protest.”

“YOUR SILENCE is THE problem. You’ll accept a fake award breathlessly and affect no real change. I despise your hypocrisy. Maybe you should all wear Marchesa.”

By ‘Pig Monster’, McGowan is of course referencing disgraced movie producer Harvey Weinstein. In October, she alleged that he had raped her; an accusation which Weinstein denies.

McGowan is one of dozens of women who have accused the producer of sexual harassment and assault. But several A-listers who have worked with Weinstein in the past, including Streep, have been criticised for not speaking up.

It was also revealed that Weinstein may have forced actresses to wear dresses by his estranged wife Georgina Chapman’s brand, Marchesa.

The label will be making a return to New York Fashion Week in February though it’s unclear if any famous faces will want to attend.

Chapman filed for divorce from Weinstein almost immediately after the first allegations arose.

Several people on Twitter have agreed with McGowan’s sentiment, praising her for speaking her mind as always.

“You’re so right about #MerylStreep, black dresses is whatever, if she was for real she’d boycott the #Oscars forever,” one person wrote.

“I completely agree!! The days of females protesting silently are over!! #MerylStreep Speak Up, yell it!!! Not one more minute should be spent being quiet about harassment and sexual assault,” said another supporter.

However, actress and McGowan’s friend Amber Tamblyn disagrees with the statement, saying women shouldn’t be shaming other women.

“Rose McGowan is a friend and while I support her kind of movement, I do not support any woman (or man) shaming or taunting the movements of other women who are trying to create change. Telling us all to wear Marchesa? This is beneath you, Rose,” she tweeted.

Appearing to reveal that she will be one of the women wearing black at the Golden Globes, Tamblyn continued: “You don’t have to support and stand with us, but we stand and support you. You may take below the belt shots at us but we will not take them at you in return.”

“Our movement is big. And a black dress is just the beginning of the darkness that will be drained from every industry across the country by the time we’re done. That’s a promise.”

High-profile activist and pioneer of the #MeToo movement Alyssa Milano agreed, replying: “I stand by every woman in the pursuit of permanent change and gender equality.”
