From Rihanna as the Pope to Zendaya as Joan of Arc: The Met Gala guests who took the theme seriously
If you, like us, stayed up late last night to watch the Met Gala 2018 unfold on social media, you wouldn’t have been wrong to assume we were in for a disappointing night.
Initial red carpet arrivals elicited disappointment on Twitter, with the main qualm being that guest weren’t taking the theme – ‘Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination’ – seriously enough.
YouTuber Liza Koshy unfortunately caught most of the flack and was the subject of hundreds of memes for her less-than-creative outfit choice.
But thankfully, all of that changed the moment Rihanna (the undisputed Queen of the Met Gala and dress themes in general) stepped out in a bejewelled gown, overcoat and pope hat by Maison Margiela.
From then on, things just got better: Zendaya in head-to-toe chainmail as Joan of Arc, Katy Perry in enormous angel wings and Jared Leto channelling Jesus Christ himself.
In all, it turned out to be one of the best Met Gala themes in recent years for the creativity of the attendees.
