Rebel Wilson says she wasn’t allowed to lose weight while playing Fat Amy in ‘Pitch Perfect’: 'It’s in your contract’
Rebel Wilson says playing Fat Amy in the Pitch Perfect franchise meant she had to delay her weight loss journey.
"I couldn’t lose a massive amount of weight cause I was in the contracts for that movie," the Australian actress said on the Call Her Daddy podcast. "You can’t lose, I think it was not more than 10 pounds, or gain more than 10 pounds. You have to kind of stay at the weight, it’s in your contract. But I had been thinking for a while like, I wanted to get healthier and I was stereotyped in playing that fat, funny friend."
The archetype was one she says she was happy to play, as she calls Fat Amy "the best character in the whole movie" and shares how fun it was to make. However, Wilson ultimately felt "pigeonholed" when it came to opportunities she would get throughout the industry. She also started to consider having a family as she approached 40 years old.
"I went to see a fertility doctor and he was like, 'Well you know you’d have a much better chance with fertility if you were healthier.' And I was like, 'Oh god, what’s he talking about?' Because my life is like a Lizzo song where I’m like, you know, bad bitch o’clock all that stuff. That was my life and then I’ve got this stranger saying, 'Yeah, but you’re not healthy, look at you.' And then it really hit me hard."
Wilson said she had always been "a body positive person" and lived a "fantastic bigger life" without any serious health issues. She lacked confidence, however, in romantic relationships and discovered that she was using food as comfort.
"I didn’t have a great love life so I was normally at home at night eating ice cream, eating chocolate or whatever, which was comforting at the time but it wasn’t like a great move overall," she explained. "So slowly as I was turning 40, then became healthier."
Wilson's weight loss was splashed across headlines as she shared her journey with fitness and self-confidence on social media. She then later opened up about her difficult experience with IVF. In November, Wilson and her partner Ramona Agruma welcomed a baby girl via surrogate.
