Poundland unveils £1 engagement rings in time for Valentine's Day
Poundland’s selling £1 engagement rings in the lead-up to Valentine’s Day on 14 February.
The jewellery collection, dubbed the ‘Bling Ring’ line, is available to shop in the brand’s high street stores now.
Shoppers can choose from a range of rings, including one with a red heart-shaped jewel in the centre, a blue marquise shaped stone, and a round faux-diamond.
Those who think £1 is a little cheap for an engagement ring can rest assured they are not meant to be a real deal, but instead a placeholder for the purpose of proposing with.
The red heart-shaped box that comes with each box has the slogan: “because we promise they’ll want to choose their own”.
Predictably, the launch has been met with mixed reactions. Some people praised the idea, which was shared in the ‘Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK’ Facebook group.
One wrote: “Is this not the best idea ever? Buy a cheap ring from Poundland to propose then go to the shop so you can pick a proper one together.”
However, others weren’t a fan of the “choose your own ring” approach.
One user said, ““Why would anyone want to pick their own ring? Isn’t the point of it that the man you love has chosen it for you?”, while another wrote, “”Nothing says undying love like an engagement ring from Poundland.”
“These are beautiful placeholder rings because we know they’ll want to buy their own,” a Poundland spokesperson said.
“We’re looking forward to the Poundland proposal becoming the way it’s done. Our bling ring is setting the scene for the real deal.”
Of course, for those who believe true love is priceless, a £1 proposal may a good way of putting your money – or disinterest in it – where your mouth is.
Meanwhile, one woman was recently slated online for complaining about her partner’s choice of engagement ring, before she had even found it.
Then there are some women who disagree with engagement rings altogether – calling the concept anti-feminist.
