Most popular baby names of 2018 revealed
The most popular baby names of 2018 have been revealed, and while there’s not been much movement at the top, there are plenty of new editions and fast climbers.
The moniker bods at parenting site BabyCentre have rounded up the top 100 UK baby names of 2018 so far for baby girls and baby boys, to provide mums and dads-to-be with some inspiration.
Though there aren’t may surprises about the names at the very top of the list, there are some interesting naming trends of note, some newcomers to the top 100 list, as well as some historically popular names that fallen right out of favour.
Babycentre’s 2017 list also found Olivia and Muhammad to be the most popular names last year with Oliver coming in close second.
And, a year on, it seems these top choices are just as popular in 2018 as they were 12 months ago.
But there are also some new additions for 2018, including Victoria, Eden and Jasper. Another big hit with parents this year is Noah – while Harry has nabbed the fourth spot.
Leo, George, and Jack, also feature in the top 10 – with Charlie sneaking in just behind in eighth place. Newcomers to the entire top 100 list include Grayson, Sam, Felix, Louis, Jasper, and the unusual Aayan.
When it comes to naming baby girls, nine monikers have made debuts in this year’s chart including Aaliyah, Aisha, and Bonnie.
Only two new entries made it into the top 10: Aria, combined with its’ Game of Thrones’ character spelling Arya, proving the hit show is still influencing baby names. Kiara, Iris, Victoria, Elena and Eden also take their place in the top 100, though the previously popular Niamh, Sara, and Skye seem to have seen a dip this year.
The royal effect has had an impact on baby names, with new prince Louis, making his entrance into the world in April and straight onto the round-up.
But despite the popularity of the new Duchess of Sussex, the moniker Meghan/Megan has seemingly fallen out of favour.
Princess Charlotte is also riding high in the naming list with the moniker Charlotte taking the 15th spot. Five-year-old Prince George can be proud he shares his name with many other little Georges as the sixth most popular choice for baby boys this year.
And with another royal baby making an appearance next year, could parents-to-be Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have an impact on baby names in 2019?
