Plus-size woman turned into a body-shaming meme fights back

Plus-size model Noonie Regardless works to educate her 50,000 Instagram followers on loving your body no matter your size.

Since becoming prominent in the body-positive community, Noonie has become used to the odd critical comment.

But she has never been the focus of a specific attack. Until now.

Recently, Noonie noticed a photo of her wearing a crop top had been turning into a cruel body-shaming meme.

“I was on [Instagram’s] explore page looking at other beautiful women that I admired and would soon follow,” she told Metro.

‘I realised I’d seen myself. I clicked the picture thinking ‘Oh, someone posted me on their wall, let me thank them.’ Then I saw the caption above my picture.”

The caption read ‘leave the bralette and crop top wearing to us skinny girls’ followed by a whale and throwing up emoji.

Unlike many who would be devastated at being the face of a meme, Noonie simply laughed it off.

“I love myself way too much to let someone I don’t even know bring me down,” she said.

“I don’t care if Beyoncé told me I was ugly or fat. I would still laugh and smile because I know my worth and I am beautiful no matter what my size is or how society views me.”

And instead of hiding from the meme and pretending she hadn’t noticed, Noonie reposted it in all its glory on her own account.

“No I don’t have the flat stomach to flex in a crop top/bralette but I have a muffin top to do so,” she wrote in the caption. “I don’t know why people still body shame at this point. It’s quite pointless if you ask me.”

“You don’t have to be skinny to rock a crop top or bralette. To my ladies with stomachs, wear whatever the hell you want and make everyone feel uncomfortable. As women, we have to learn to build each other up instead of trying to break each other down.”

The post has now received almost 8000 likes on Instagram and has hopefully inspired other victims of body-shaming to stand up for themselves.

Noonie admitted that she hasn’t always been confident but says “there’s nothing I should be ashamed of when it comes to my looks, my skin colour or size.”

For those who want to fight back in a similar way, Noonie has the perfect advice.

She suggests to simply say: ‘F*** off” adding that “if crop tops were just for skinny girls, who do they also make them in big sizes instead of just small? I’ll forever wear crop tops and make sure everyone in the room is uncomfortable.’

And so she should.
