Piers Morgan criticises Michelle Obama for 'trash-talking' Melania Trump

Piers Morgan has hit out at former First Lady Michelle Obama for allegedly snubbing her successor, Melania Trump.

In a column written for the MailOnline, Piers, 53, accuses former US President Barack Obama’s wife of ‘bitchy sniping’ aimed at the present First Lady.

He claims Michelle, 54, has snubbed Melania, 48, on numerous occasions while doing publicity for her new book, ‘Becoming’, on the ‘Jimmy Fallon’ television show.

“Just when I thought there was one person in public life that soared effortlessly and admirably above the incessantly ugly partisan trash-talk that pervades every second of American airspace these days, Mrs Obama has let me down,” writes the controversial journalist and ‘Good Morning Britain’ presenter.

Piers referenced a conversation between Jimmy and Michelle where the latter said the phrase ‘Bye Felicia’ in relation to leaving the White House.

He explains in the column: “The phrase ‘Bye Felicia’ is an intensely derogatory one. It was first coined by rapper Ice Cube’s character Craig in the 1995 cult stoner comedy movie, ‘Friday’.”

He continues: “The phrase is now widely used, especially on social media, as an ice cold ‘kiss off’ for unpleasant people who you want to avoid.”

While it is not clear who Obama is referring to – Melania, her husband or both – Piers insists the ‘similar phonetic name’ is meant to be a direct swipe at the First Lady.

He also referenced a comment Michelle made about the Tiffany photo frame given to her by Melania on Donald’s inauguration day, where she said: “Then the Tiffany’s box..”.

Later in the column, Piers delivers his verdict on the alleged spat:

“It’s no secret that Michelle and Melania don’t get on, but there is no reason they have to.

“Their apparent mutual dislike doesn’t mean they should openly criticise each other, particularly as a tool to sell books and make money.

“Yet Michelle hasn’t stopped sniping at Melania for the past few weeks during her huge media tour.”

While it is certainly questionable whether or not Michelle was ‘trash-talking’ her successor, the mum-of-two has opened up considerably during her book tour.

Last month she revealed during an interview with ‘Good Morning America’, the Obamas, like many other couples, went through counselling at one point during their marriage.

She told interviewer Robin Roberts: “I know too many young couples who struggle and think there’s something wrong with them and I want them to know that Michelle and Barack Obama, who have a phenomenal marriage and love each other, we work on our marriage.”
