Why parents are hiding pickles in their Christmas trees this festive season
Every family has their own Christmas quirks – whether it’s an annual trip to the pantomime or opening the presents on Boxing Day. But this festive season, a new trend is set to sweep the nation with parents hiding a pickle on the Christmas tree.
Yes, you read that correctly.
According to the longstanding tradition, you hang a pickle-shaped ornament on the fir and whoever finds it first on Christmas morning will be blessed with good luck in the new year.
In addition to this, some families believe that the person who spots it first is allowed to open a gift before anyone else. Alternatively, they can be in charge of dishing out the presents to the rest of the family.
It is widely believed that the tradition originates from Germany where it is known as Weihnachtsgurke.
Sascha Müller of the Lauscha Glass Centre in Thuringia is reportedly behind the trend after learning of the tradition in the 1990s during a trip to Frankenmuth in Michigan. He introduced the team to the unique trend and the company now makes over 50,000 pickle decorations a year – making it the glass centre’s bestseller.
The tradition is now extremely popular over in the US – with a large number of parents adopting the trend every festive season.
So before you bring back last year’s Elf on the Shelf, you might want to consider bagging a decorative pickle.
