Nutella has changed its recipe and chocolate spread devotees have flocked to Twitter to vent their frustration.

Italian manufacturer Ferrero (which counts Nutella as one its confectionary brands) has confirmed that the spread will become lighter but will contain more sugar.

According to the BBC, the new formula will contain 8.7 percent powdered skimmed milk (compared to the previous quantity of 7.5 percent) and that sugar content will rise from 55.9 percent to 56.3 percent.

And the decision has divided Nutella fans across the globe, as many took to social media threatening to boycott the brand using the hashtag #NutellaGate.

Yet despite customer concerns, the chocolate giant has reassured the public that the product won’t change much.

In a statement, Ferrero announced: “The quality… and all other aspects of Nutella remain the same.”

Well, we guess we’ll just have to wait and see…
