Paul Mescal has captured the hearts of viewers for his role as Connell Waldron in the BBC series Normal People, which first aired on 26 April.
Not only has the depiction of Connell first love with Marianne, and his battle with depression, tugged on our heartstrings, but so has the silver chain he wears throughout the 12-part series.
The glimpses of the necklace on his chest during a football match while at school, in the pool, and the little glint of silver on his neck in the intimate scenes between the young couple, has not gone unnoticed.
So much so, a fan account dedicated to Mescal’s chain, @connelschain, was set up on Saturday (2 May), and the Instagram account already boasts over 15,000 followers.
The necklace was included in the TV adaptation of Sally Rooney’s 2018 novel because it was so poignant in the book too, although it was described as “Argos chic”.
The prop appeared to have meant a lot to Mescal, too.
After shooting wrapped, the Irish actor gifted the coveted item of jewellery to his British co-star Daisy Edgar-Jones, who is said to have lost it.
Fans of the TV show have shared their love of the jewellery item on Twitter.

Today I'm grateful for the tender, gentle love making scenes in #normalpeople, the character of Connell Waldron and the thin silver chain around his neck.
Thank you, God. pic.twitter.com/K4DJkiMhpj— Ni-khee-tah (@Tweekita) May 3, 2020
Speaking to The Times, costume designer Lorna Marie Mugan said: “Connell has the chain throughout, that’s the thing,” she said.
“It’s a thing he carries through his journey.”
Fans can’t get enough of the item of jewellery, as sales for chains have soared by up to 130 per cent on ASOS in April alone.
