Nike launches its first ever range of maternity sportswear

Finding the right clothing for your ever-changing body can be a challenge during pregnancy – especially when it comes to activewear.
Sportswear brand Nike has answered the prayers of many pregnant women and new mums by launching its first maternity collection.
With a focus on fit, support and comfort, the range is suitable for those who are pregnant as well as mums who have just given birth.
The collection, known as the M range, was created by comparing the body analytics of 150,000 non-pregnant women against pregnant women to come up with the best fit.
“The more we listened to expecting mothers and post-partum mothers, the more we learned, reworked and innovated through inclusive design.
“It’s the project of a lifetime to work in lockstep with all kinds of mothers to bring to life a capsule that truly supports women’s relationship with sport during such a transformative time in their lives,” Carmen Zolman, Nike Senior Design Director for Apparel Innovation, said.

The range, which is slightly more expensive than Nike’s usual lines, features a small collection of maternity essentials. This includes a pullover (£69.95), swoosh bra (£39.95), tank (£31.95) and Nike One tights (£54.95).
The bra also includes a second layer, offering mums easy access for breastfeeding or pumping.
Other items have additional layers and stretching material, meaning that they’re appropriate to wear whatever stage of pregnancy you’re at.

Retired British track and field athlete and new mum Perri Edwards said: “The Nike (M) sports bra is great because it’ll give me easy access for when I want to breastfeed.
“The leggings give you options of wearing over your tummy or showing your tummy, and the maternity shirt has this extra material for the extra weight that I’m carrying.
“You look very smart, very comfortable, very hip,”
While this is a first for the sportswear brand, retailers like H&M and ASOS have been stocking a full range of maternity activewear for some time.
According to the NHS, regular exercise (around 30 minutes per day) is advised throughout pregnancy, unless otherwise decided with your GP or midwife, giving us the perfect excuse to stock up on maternity must-haves.
