What happened when a mum-to-be told a Tinder date she's pregnant
After beginning a casual relationship with a man she met on Tinder, one woman soon discovered she was pregnant but telling the father-to-be didn’t go as smoothly as hoped.
Rebecca began seeing someone from the dating app after getting out of a serious two-year relationship and wasn’t worried about contraception.
“I honestly didn’t think becoming a mum was on the cards for me,” she told Honey. “During that two-year relationship I wasn’t that careful with contraception, I was on-and-off the pill and found out I only had one working ovary but I never fell pregnant.”
Despite this, Rebecca later found out that she was in fact expecting a baby and the first person she told was the father.
“I was in tears feeling overwhelmed with emotions,” she revealed. “He asked what I was going to do with it… without really thinking, my first reaction was to get rid of it because I barely know this guy and didn’t see a future with him. Becoming a mother scared the sh** out of me. He was happy about that.”
But after carefully weighing up the options, Rebecca decided the next day that she would keep the baby, as the surprise pregnancy felt like a “blessing”.
Yet when she broke the news to the father, he was less than supportive.
“He got really angry as he already has three kids to a previous relationship. His reasoning was that he doesn’t want the responsibility and can’t afford it,” she explained. “He told me to get rid of it but I just couldn’t. He said, ‘doesn’t he have a choice in the matter?’ I said, of course you do but so do I.”
Since the heated conversation, Rebecca has only heard from the father twice in the seven months she’s been pregnant but is no longer afraid to become a single parent.
“The way I see it, is that as my baby boy gets older, he won’t know any different. He’ll just remember it being the two of us,” she said. “When the time comes and he starts asking about his father, I will be completely honest with him.”
Rebecca continued, “The father is welcome to see his son anytime he wants. I don’t believe my actions or decisions are selfish, I feel a grown man not wanting to have anything to do with his son is selfish.”
Although she does not have the support of her child’s father, her family have rallied around her in the run-up to the birth.
“Everyone has been really supportive. Telling people I’m going to be doing this on my own, has just made me stronger and determined to be the best mother I can be for my child.”
