Willow, Lily and Ivy lead the most popular plant-inspired baby names of the year
No longer is it enough for parents to give their house plants affectionate nicknames, as there’s a growing number of us naming our children after famous foliage.
According to a new report from trend analyst giant McCrindle, plant-inspired monikers are on the rise this year.
In the top 100 names given to babies born in Australia in 2019, an impressive amount were inspired by nature with three of the five overall most popular girls’ names boasting a plant theme.
Willow came in at number 10 having jumped 64 positions in the last nine years. A celebrity trend may have influenced naming habits with singer Willow Smith, the daughter of Will and Jayda Smith, garnering fame.

Ivy is in at number 18 followed by Lily (22nd place), Violet (39th place), Poppy (41st place) and Daisy (47th place).
Violet jumped an impressive 53 positions with Emily Blunt and husband John Krasinski sure to be guilty of the trend after naming their second daughter Violet in 2016.
Rose (56th), Jasmine (63rd), and Olive (79th) also made the cut - the unusual name of actress Drew Barrymore’s first daughter.
It’s a trend which has continued to grow in the UK too.

According to a recent report by Nameberry, Poppy is one of Britain’s most popular names so far this year sitting pretty at number 9.
Lily also features on the list at number 11 followed by Ivy (15th place) and Willow (18th place).
