An ode to Ugg boots: How 2020 reignited my love for the comfy footwear

I have precisely 3,400 Facebook photos from my gap year back in 2009 and around 3,000 of them feature my inseparable partner: my Ugg boots.

I wore them in the cold. I wore them in the heat. I wore them with jumpers and skirts and with pyjamas when popping out to to the shops.

I wore them up mountains (not advised), on boats and – on more than one occasion – to a club.

In short, wherever I went, they were with me - and together with my passport, they were my most valued possession.

I wasn’t the only one with a love for an Ugg.

Much of the population was enjoying a love affair with the Ugg boot in the late 90s/early 2000s - the soft sheep skin interior and clever cooling/heating ability drew people in like moths to a flame.

My own love affair continued into my university days when, hungover and with five-minutes to spare before a lecture, I would slip them on alongside leggings and a jumper.

Somewhere along the way though, my Ugg’s got relegated to the back of my wardrobe. No longer my flavour of the month, I swapped them for loafers, chic trainers and on-trend court shoes.

For years, I’m sad to say, I forgot about them.

Until we moved house a few months ago and out from the very back of my cupboard came a rainbow of Ugg boots in classic brown, purple, knitted grey and dusty pink.

Slipping a foot inside them felt like returning home to your parents for a hot meal after a hard day.

I knew I had to start wearing them again, though I was slightly wary of the response I might get from fashion-forward friends.

I needn’t have worried though - the most common response my cosy boots elicit is a nostalgic “ahhh, Ugg’s” or a variation of “I must find mine”.

They are the perfect accompaniment to jeans, dresses and tights or leggings. They make dressing for this changeable weather a doddle and, best of all, they are every bit as comfortable as I remember.

They’re brilliant for working from home - keeping my feet snug and meaning I don’t need to faff around looking for footwear if I need to nip to the shop (for chocolate) or feel like going on a walk (inevitably for more chocolate).

In short, I owe my Uggs an apology. My years of neglect were misjudged and my feet haven’t thanked me for it.

They’re not cheap, but in terms of cost-per-wear, I’d predict I’m somewhere below zero right now.

It’s the reunion that keeps on giving and a reminder that fashion is about how you wear something.
