A mini investigation into Donald Trump's unruly hair

Fewer things are more fascinating that Donald Trump’s hair. According to the social media circuit, at least.

And it’s hardly surprising, after a bizarre video went viral on Wednesday.

In extraordinary footage, the 71-year-old’s wispy locks are picked apart by forceful winds, as he boards Air Force One. Cameras positioned behind the President as he climbed the plane’s stairs had the perfect rear-facing view of his scalp as the strong gusts briefly exposed his bare head to the world.

We’ve all had bad hair days, but this was something else. The video, which has already amassed over 40,000 views, perfectly captured the President’s worst nightmare and left the world wondering what exactly *is* going on with his hair?

Let’s take a look at the evidence:

Theory One: Donald Trump’s hair is all natural

Back in 2011, Trump revealed the ‘secret’ behind his famous ‘do during an interview with Rolling Stone: “OK, what I do is, wash it with Head and Shoulders. I don’t dry it, though. I let it dry by itself. It takes about an hour. Then I read papers and things.”

He continued, “I then comb my hair. Yes, I do use a comb… Do I comb it forward? No, I don’t comb it forward. I actually don’t have a bad hairline. When you think about it, it’s not bad. I mean, I get a lot of credit for comb-overs. But it’s not really a comb-over. It’s sort of a little bit forward and back. I’ve combed it the same way for years. Same thing, every time.”

And it seems Trump even got his doctor on board with this tale.

In an interview with The New York Times, Trump’s doctor, Dr Harold Bornstein, insisted that he has ‘all his hair’.

According to Bornstein, who has been the US President’s doctor for the past 36 years, Trump takes a small dose of the drug Finasteride, which is designed to lower levels of prostate-specific antigen thus promotes hair growth.

Theory Two: Donald Trump has undergone a hair transplant

Despite Trump’s hopes, his constant insistence that his famous mop is real doesn’t cut it, as his blonde locks have long been the subject of speculation.

And according to the book of the year, Fire and Fury, his daughter Ivanka Trump often brings up the ‘mechanics’ of her father’s hair with close friends.

Michael Wolff described her account in his explosive new book: “An absolutely clean pate – a contained island after scalp reduction surgery – surrounded by a furry circle of hair around the sides and front, from which all ends are drawn up to meet in the centre then swept back and secured by a stiffening spray.”

“The colour, she would point out to comical effect was from a product called Just for Men – the longer it was left on, the darker it got. Impatience resulted in Trump’s orange-blond hair colour,” he wrote.

And not quite convinced by Trump’s Head and Shoulders regime, we contacted Dr Thomy Kouremada-Zioga, Hair Loss Specialist and Transplant Surgeon at The Private Clinic of Harley Street, for the lowdown.

“The area that appears to be bald belongs to his donor area, in other words, the area that a hair transplant surgeon would harvest the follicles from during a hair transplant procedure”, Dr Zioga explained. “These follicles would then be transplanted into the thinning area, for example, the temples.”

“I think the thinning at the back of his head could be due to one of two scenarios. The first, is that in the past he has undergone several hair transplant sessions that has resulted in his donor area being over harvested”, she added. “Age may have thinned his hair further resulting in very thin hair at the back of his head, with fuller hair at the front – where the hair might have been transplanted.”

“The second, is that genetically his donor area is very fine and because of his age, the hair is now white which offers very little coverage. This means that the skin underneath is more apparent which is why he may keep his hair long on top, to cover this area.”

But if the POTUS has undergone several transplants, how much will it have set him back?

“My thoughts would be that he has had more than one procedure in order to cover the top of his head,” Dr Zioga admitted. “Depending on the method used and how many procedures he has had, the cost could be anywhere between £10k -20k.”

No wonder he’s keeping his ‘do on the quiet.
