We’re big fans of cooking: We love getting all the pots, pans and equipment out and whipping up a delicious feast.
However, we’re not fans of the washing up. We get so caught up channeling Ainsley Harriet we forget that every dish, pot and piece of crockery we’ve used has to be washed.
Even those of us with dishwashers aren’t completely free from the kitchen sink, as there are all sorts of things that we can’t put in the dishwasher.
Washing and then drying takes up more time than we’d like it to; time we’d rather be spending lying on the sofa, luxuriating in that post-meal lethargy.
While we can’t suggest anything to make the actual washing up faster, we do have a pretty affordable gadget to help with the drying.
The £6.99 Brabantia Microfibre Dish Drying Mat, available from Amazon and John Lewis, is a countertop essential when hand washing pots, pans, dishes, glassware and cutlery. The microfibre absorbs seven times its weight in water and keeps the worktop dry.
The soft mat not only looks chic (as chic as a drying mat can look) it is also machine washable at 60°C.

One customer called it “unreal” saying: “It dries and absorbs water pretty much effortlessly. By far the best ever brought.”
While another added: “Absolutely love this drying mat. I use it next to my new dish drainer that has the cutlery holder hanging over slightly so needed something to stop the excess water going everywhere.”
Some fans have even purchased multiple mats for when one is in the wash: “Have just bought two more of these mats as they are the best I have found,” wrote one person. “They are absorbent and they wash well. I like the grey colour as it goes well with my modern kitchen decor.”
A drying mat probably isn’t the most exciting thing you’ve bought this year, but it will save you time, which makes it a wise investment in our book.
Right, now where did we put our whisk. We’ve got some baking to do...
