Melania Trump's Dior suit may have contained a hidden meaning
Earlier this month, Donald and Melania Trump made a presidential visit to the French capital of Paris.
Melania ensured she was the First Lady of diplomacy, wearing a range of eye-catching designs from French powerhouse designers including Givenchy, Herve Pierre and Dior.
Just as the Duchess of Cambridge did on her recent royal tour of Poland and Germany, Melania chose looks that corresponded to the colour of France’s flag.
But it was her striking red Dior suit that got everyone talking.
The fitted skirt suit featured a full skirt and buttoned-up jacket with a nipped-in waist. Melania wore it to meet France’s new First Lady, Brigitte Macron.
Dior is one of Paris’ most successful fashion houses. Christian Dior made his fame after World War II in which he brought in a ‘New Look’ for women.
In fact, it was a bit of an old look in terms of the silhouettes that were displayed. Dior had designed clothes that adhered to traditional gender norms, turning women into little more than ornaments.
Where women had been liberated by entering the workforce for the first time, their fashion seemed to be taking a step backwards. It was restrictive and sometimes so big that wearers would struggle to fit through doorways.
Melania’s choice of such a suit is an interesting one. It is believed that the First Lady is representing an old-fashioned view of womanhood; something that husband Donald Trump is replicating in his anti-abortion (and seemingly anti-female) policies.
Her red outfit was certainly in stark contrast to Macron’s ultra-modern Louis Vuitton mini dress.
Whether this was a calculated decision by the White House team or simply Melania’s preference, only time will tell.
