Melania Trump revives J.Crew as the first lady uniform
Melania Trump is taking fashion cues from her 11-year-old son, Barron, by wearing a surprisingly affordable designer: J.Crew.
Fresh off a weekend spent at the presidential retreat Camp David in Maryland, the first lady returned to the White House on Sunday wearing head-to-toe pink: a $75 white-and-pink gingham J.Crew buttoned-down shirt, J Brand skinny jeans, and fuchsia ballet flats with metallic details. She was accompanied by the president and Barron, the latter of whom wore a T-shirt, shorts, and a pair of $480 navy blue Gucci loafers.
Melania’s casual shirt (which a J.Crew representative confirmed to Yahoo Style is the “Perfect shirt in mini gingham” from the 2012 collection and a discontinued item) was a 360-degree departure from how she began the weekend, wearing an $1,880 green Missoni midi-dress and Manolo Blahnik orange snakeskin stilettos. The shirt is a unique item for the first lady, who has become a controversial fashion figure with a closet full of high-end clothing and a rocky reputation, with multiple designers such as Tom Ford and Marc Jacobs refusing to dress her due to reported political differences.
Also noteworthy is Melania’s choice to wear J.Crew above any other affordable brand (Ivanka is a fan of Target) — Michelle Obama is credited with making J.Crew mainstream in the White House, both during former President Barack Obama’s presidential campaign and during two terms in Washington, with daughters Sasha and Malia also becoming loyal devotees of the brand.
Barron Trump was the first member of the Trump family to promote J.Crew, in June with a $29.50 gray T-shirt bearing the phrase “The Expert” and earlier this month with a $24.50 red T-shirt that read, “On your mark Tiger shark.” That same month, Ivanka wore a black-and-white gingham dress by J.Crew.
