The public smooch marks the couple out from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, who – with the exception of their 2011 wedding kiss – tend to avoid such public displays of affection.
“The message is so strong that they can be royal they can make positive impact and that they are perfect role models making royalty relevant and public affection acceptable,” PR expect Nick Ede told Yahoo UK.
This isn’t the first time Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have kissed in public.
Aside from their much-celebrated wedding kisses, they previously shared an intimate moment at a polo match at the Sentebale Polo Cup at Berkshire polo Club in July 2018.
The couple, who wed in May 2018, are generally much more affectionate in public than their Cambridge counterparts – regularly pictured holding hands, for instance during a recent appearance at the ‘Lion King’ premiere last July.
The pair will not be parted for long.
They will reunite later on today to visit Auwal mosque, the oldest mosque in South Africa, before having tea with local residents in the Bo Kaap area.
This evening they will go on to attended a reception for young future leaders at the British High Commissioner Nigel Casey’s residence.
