The meaning behind Beyoncé's five-outfit Coachella wardrobe (and numerous manicures)
After postponing last year’s highly-anticipated Coachella performance to welcome twins with husband Jay-Z, Beyoncé returned to the festival this weekend for a set that will go down in history.

As the first black woman to ever headline the annual event (yup, it’s 2018), Beyoncé was already prepped to grace the headlines. But throw a Destiny’s Child reunion, sister/sister duet with Solange and performance with Jay-Z into the mix and it’s an event to tell your grandchildren about.

But it wasn’t merely the 36-year-old’s awe-inspiring stage presence which led fans to dub this year’s festival, ‘Beychella’, as her wardrobe is partly to thank.
In collaboration with Balmain’s Oliver Rousteing, the designer created one-of-a-kind outfits not only for Queen B but her 200 backing dancers too. But having previously dressed the singer for her 2016 Formation tour, Rousteing was well prepped for one of the most coveted sartorial jobs of the year.
Let’s take a deep dive into the meaning behind one of her most talked about looks to date.
Beyoncé changed her outfit five times during her Coachella set
Not one to settle on mass-produced looks, Beyoncé’s stylist, Marnie Senofonte, approached Rousteing for custom-made pieces ahead of the gig.

As a consequence to the singer’s theme of ‘survivors’, the creative director designed a line of looks which boasted a military feel. Throughout the songstress’ wardrobe a new crest which bore symbols of black power was heavily featured. With a bee, black panther and fist, it was a fitting tribute to her and husband Jay-Z’s ongoing support for the Black Lives Matter campaign. The 36-year-old also opened her performance with ‘Lift Every Voice and Sing’, which is dubbed America’s ‘black national anthem’.
In a later performance, the singer donned a heavily-embroidered cape in sartorial tribute to Egyptian Queen Nefertiti. Beyoncé accessorised the look with a hat adorned with black feathers which has since become a symbol of beauty and femininity.
Oh, and she got a manicure to match
Eagle-eyed fans were quick to note that not only did the singer switch up her look a total of five times but she got a manicure to match.

In her most Beyoncé move to date, the songstress transformed her nails from black to gold throughout her performances and Twitter was understandably hysterical. Talk about attention to detail.
So am I the only one who noticed when @Beyonce went to change outfits she changed her damn nail polish? We don’t deserve her! @coachella#coachella#beychellapic.twitter.com/R27kQ5lIBs

Husband Jay-Z was left awe-struck by one of her looks
In an exclusive interview with Vogue, Rousteing opened up about given the most coveted job of the year. And there was one candid moment which stuck out in his mind.
He revealed to the publication: “Jay saw the Egyptian goddess cape and when B put it on, his eyes went wide and he was so excited, he said, ‘Oh, wow!’ That gave me a lot of satisfaction.”
She may be the Queen of Coachella but Beyoncé is still pretty down to earth
“I think the thing I will always remember is sitting on the floor with B and cutting fabric,” Rousteing told Vogue. “Blue comes in and runs over to B, and B holds her in her arms while talking to us about the cuts and silhouettes. To me, it was just such a beautiful moment because here you are with this megastar but also, she is a strong woman and a loving momma to her daughter.”

But it isn’t over just yet, as Beyoncé is set to perform at Coachella next weekend too in a whole new line-up of bespoke Balmain numbers.
