Masturbation breaks at work could be the next big thing

It’s an experimental time for the world of work, whether that’s the introduction of a six-hour working day in Sweden or the never-ending onslaught of hot desking across the UK (we just want our own desks, okay?)

Next up is the idea of taking masturbation breaks during working hours.

Yep, you read that right – a recent article by Ravishly has declared self-love as the new smoking break.

Why? A Time Out survey found that 39% of the New York men it questioned admitted to masturbating while at work – and in 2012, a Glamour survey suggested 31% of its readers have done so too.

And across the internet, people of all genders and orientations are admitting to doing it, whether due to pure horniness or to reduce stress.

And whether you’re nodding in an ‘of course’ sort of way, or are horrified, whether workplaces should allow breaks especially for this activity is becoming an actual discussion.

Senior lecturer in psychology at Nottingham Trent University, Mark Sergeant, told Metro that such breaks would be “very effective at work” and described it as a “great way to relieve tension and stress”.

And Psychologist and life coach Dr Cliff Arnall had this to say about it:

“I would expect a masturbation policy to result in more focus, less aggression, higher productivity, and more smiling.

“Certainly taking a masturbation break for boredom or an escape would increase work focus.”

On one hand, maybe they have a valid point here – we’re always trying to find new ways of releasing stress at work.

But on the other the thought of a colleague, erm, relieving themselves while you’re dashing to Pret for lunch might not be our ideal idea of team bonding.

Zambia has introduced ‘menstrual leave’ for female employees. Should the UK follow suit?
