Marks & Spencer has earned a reputation for dropping affordable fashion staples that look so much more expensive than their affordable price tags. This season has been particularly bountiful on the bargains front, with a Toteme-esque borg coat and Ganni-style leopard-print jeans flying off the shelves – and now, a not-so-humble duffle coat (or duffel coat, both spellings are fine) is the centre of our shopping attention.

'A duffle coat?!' you say, incredulously. Well, yes, they're back again, and we're not complaining. Those classic toggle fastenings, practical hoods and deep pockets remind us of our childhoods, and today's styles are chicer than ever for a grown-up twist, too. Leading the duffle coat charge this winter is model Alexa Chung, who recently posted a photo of herself wearing an elegant navy style (admittedly by Dior, not M&S, but we can't all be A-listers). 'Nothing sexier than a duffel coat IMHO,' she wrote, and so fashion lovers everywhere sat up, listened, took notes and headed straight to the high street.

Sure enough, duffle coats are trickling into our favourite stores, ready for colder days. But our pick of the bunch so far has got to be M&S' Wool Blend Hooded Short Duffle Coat, £69, in the cosy cream 'ecru' shade (it also comes in on-trend chocolate brown).

Why? Well, because with its sleek, minimalist good looks, it has future fashion-editor favourite written all over it. It's already selling fast online, too. But most of all, because it reminds us of a stunning duffle coat that Victoria Beckham sent down her autumn/winter 2024 runway (Look 25, to be precise) at Paris Fashion Week earlier this year.

That oversized, longline coat is currently available to shop online in camel for £1,790. Naturally, it's top of our wish list, but Marks & Spencer's much more bank-balance-friendly alternative feels like a decent fallback for now...

In terms of how to style it, our fashion editor Jodie Dunworth noted in her recent coat trends roundup that the modern way to wear a duffle is with smart tailoring and gossamer-thin fabrics. 'Finish with gilded accessories to execute this modern seafaring trend with military precision,' she says.
