Man injects himself with own semen to 'cure' back pain
A man has hit headlines for baffling doctors by regularly injecting himself with his own sperm.
In a report – ingeniously titled “‘Semenly’ Harmless Back Pain: An Unusual Presentation of a Subcutaneous Abscess” – author Dr. L. Dunne describes his unusual encounter with the patient.
“A 33 year old male was seen complaining of severe, sudden onset lower back pain,” the report, which was published in the Irish Medical Journal, begins.
While the doctor was tasked with treating the man’s back pain, during the examination he noticed a swelling on his arm.
“Thorough physical exam of the upper and lower limbs revealed an erythematous papule with a central focus on the medial aspect of his right upper limb […] The patient disclosed that he had intravenously injected his own semen as an innovative method to treat back pain,” he writes.
It emerged that this ‘treatment’ was devised ‘independent of any medical advice’.
“Upon further interrogation of this alternative therapy, he revealed he had injected one monthly ‘dose’ of semen for 18 consecutive months using a hypodermic needle which had been purchased online.”
The man was subsequently treated for cellulitis, which had developed as a result of the sperm injections.
The only other medical study involving sperm injections took place in 1945, by scientists at the University of Glasgow.
The study was called: “The Effects of the Injection of Human Semen into Female Animals”.
The experiment was performed on female rats, rabbits and guinea pigs. However, it did not yield any positive results.
