Madonna has revealed that she has been experiencing post-surgery "swelling" to her face, which has now "gone down".

The singer, 64, said she looked "cute" as she shared a new picture of herself in a black and denim ensemble with red hair on Twitter.

Captioning the image, the star – who didn't reveal the exact treatments or procedures she'd had – wrote: "Look how cute I am now that swelling from surgery has gone down. Lol."

Her post has received more than 67,000 'likes' and over 3,400 shares.

Many social media users praised her openness, with one person sharing "thanks for always living life on your own terms."

It comes after the star defended herself against "ageism and misogyny" after her face sparked discussion when she attended the Grammy Awards earlier this month.

In a post on Instagram, she wrote: "Instead of focusing on what I said in my speech which was about giving thanks for the fearlessness of artists like Sam [Smith] and Kim [Petras], many people chose to only talk about close-up photos of me taken with a long lens camera by a press photographer that would distort anyone’s face!!

"Once again I am caught in the glare of ageism and misogyny that permeates the world we live in.

"A world that refuses to celebrate women past the age of 45 and feels the need to punish her if she continues to be strong-willed, hard-working and adventurous.

"I have never apologized for any of the creative choices I have made nor the way that I look or dress and I’m not going to start."

Her post, which received more than 598,000 'likes', triggered a supportive response from her fans.

These included Paris Hilton who commented "love you Queen" and Dawn O'Porter who added "I just think you’re f*****g brilliant".
