Lena Dunham marks anniversary of her hysterectomy with trio of nude selfies
We all have different ways of celebrating anniversaries – whether it’s your wedding day, a birthday or a national holiday, celebrating on social media is a very common trend. But one celebrity is marking a special day by posting nude selfies to mark the anniversary of her hysterectomy.
Girls Actor and Producer Lena Dunham is marking the nine-month anniversary of her hysterectomy by sharing nude images commemorating an event that the actor admits has been a taxing area of self growth.

“Today is National Leathercraft Day, National Relaxation Day and National Lemon Merengue Pie Day. It’s also the 9 [sic] month anniversary of my hysterectomy. I’ve never celebrated the 9[sic] month anniversary of anything and I realized last night why that number feels so funny – I won’t ever do it the way I planned to,” wrote the 32-year-old.
“My body is mostly healed and every day I find a new bruise on my heart, but today I offer myself gratitude: from the most pained place, I somehow knew to choose myself. The purest glint of who we are and know we can be is always available to us, calm and true at our center.”
Sharing some insight behind the ‘RIP Judy’ tattoo displayed in the photos, Dunham explains the pseudonym for her uterus.
“My friend Paul called my uterus Judy, and when she was being uppity we called her out, hence the tattoo on my ribs, which hurt like f*** even through the pain meds,” she wrote.
“Today I give thanks for that part and for this body, which is stronger than I’ve ever given it credit for. Happy Giving Birth To Myself Day.”

In February, Dunham decided to get a hysterectomy due to ongoing suffering from endometriosis. The decision to get surgery, which removes the uterus and cervix, was a tough one, the actor admitted.
According to Endometriosis UK, one in 10 women of reproductive age suffer from endometriosis, making the disorder the second most common gynaecological condition in the UK.
The celebrity’s followers were supportive of her message, encouraging her to continue promoting self love and honesty.
“This is so beautiful. I’m giving thanks for you today. Congratulations to us all on the birth of your self love. Every day you express your self you give us a way to find our voice . You are a true artist. You are a gift,” reads one comment.
“You’re a brave lady in so many ways. You’re inspirational to a generation that is often saturated with individuality, but yours in honest, raw and refreshing. You live your truth and that’s so much more than many do. Congratulations on your nine month anniversary,” adds another.
Hey @jackantonoff I just found a potential baby name list we made in 2015. I could definitely keep this private, but then the world wouldn’t know that you suggested “Carrot” over and over… Love u!!! pic.twitter.com/ATWAV7KIC9

These photos come days after Dunham shared a list of prospective baby names herself and ex-boyfriend Jack Antonoff came up with in 2015.
The pair broke up after almost six years of dating in January.
Those suffering from endometriosis face a variety of symptoms, such as:
pain in your lower stomach or back – usually worse during your period
period pain that stops you doing normal activities
pain during or after sex
pain when using the bathroom during your period
feeling sick, constipation, diarrhoea or blood in your pee during your period
difficulty getting pregnant
The NHS recommends women make an appointment with their GP if they suspect they may have endometriosis.
