Katie Holmes' Quietly Patriotic Look Embraces Joy Following Kamala Harris's Election Loss

It’s been a bleak couple of days following the end of the 2024 election cycle, but I’m trying to find joy in the things I love—from making my own fun outfits to examining celebrity style. When Kamala Harris gave her concession speech in Washington, D.C., yesterday afternoon, she told the audience, 'This is not a time to throw up our hands. This is a time to roll up our sleeves.' As a fashion writer, I was particularly struck by the sartorial metaphor, and I couldn’t stop thinking about it when I saw Katie Holmes’ latest outfit.

Holmes recently threw her support behind Harris-Walz when she stepped out in a Lingua Franca sweater embroidered with the running mates’ names. And following the news that Harris had lost the presidential bid to Donald Trump, Holmes was seen out in New York City on Wednesday afternoon, where she appeared subtly patriotic. Even in the face of loss, perhaps she was signalling she won’t give up on the U.S. she dreams of.

For the unseasonably warm day, Holmes stacked on a few breezy pieces, including a white Leset pointelle top that she tucked into a pair of baggy blue jeans. Down low, she completed her red, white, and blue trifecta with a pair of bright vermillion ballet flats, an eye-popping addition that helped her look like a stylish American flag.

For accessories, the Dawson’s Creek alum carried a brown leather shoulder bag and wore chunky sunglasses with brown tortoiseshell frames.

But, for me, the most notable part of her look was the pink button-up she layered over her white tee. Right there along the cuffs, Holmes had rolled up the sleeves. Perfectly aligning with Harris’s speech, the choice seemed to be saying: Let the work begin.
