Kate announces royal Christmas carol service wearing a traditional festive jumper
It’s once again that time of year: the Princess of Wales is decking the halls of Westminster Abbey in preparation for her annual Christmas carol service.
Ahead of this year’s event, which will take place on 8 December, Kensington Palace released a new portrait of the Princess of Wales decorating a Christmas tree.
The shot appears to come from the same promotional video the palace released last year of Kate adding ornaments to a lit-up tree. In the photo, the princess looks festive in a traditional Fair Isle Christmas jumper tucked into a pair of high-rise black trousers.
The Holland Cooper sweater is a particular festive favourite of Kate's; she's frequently seen wearing it during the colder months. It features ribbed detailing along the collar, shiny gold buttons adorning the shoulders and sleeve cuffs, and the Fair Isle knitting pattern in dark blue and maroon.
The traditional style – referring to a knitting technique that creates patterns with multiple colours, named after one of the Shetland Islands – first gained popularity in the early 1920s when Prince Charles wore a series of Fair Isle jumpers.

Kate hosted her first Christmas service in 2021 to honour essential workers for their service during the pandemic. This year — her third time hosting the event at Westminster Abbey — will focus on a cause close to her heart: early childhood development.
Continuing the work of her Shaping Us campaign, the Princess will invite “inspiring individuals and families from all corners of the UK, including midwives, health visitors, early years practitioners, nursery teachers, and community volunteers,” according to a palace press release.
We can also expect other members of the royal family to attend; William and Kate's two eldest children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, made an appearance last year.
Though the event will take place in early December, it will not air on ITV until Christmas Eve.
