J.Crew's new 'I am a feminist too' boys T-shirt has divided the Internet

J.Crew has divided the Internet after launching a T-shirt aimed at boys with the slogan “I am a feminist too” emblazoned across it.

The American retailer launched the slogan T-shirt last week in a bid to help encourage little ones to embrace gender equality from an early age.

The tee forms part of a collaboration with prinkshop, a brand trying to raise awareness about important issues such as gun control, women’s rights and education access.

What’s more, 10% of the proceeds of each shirt, which retails at £16.50, go to Girl Up, a global movement hosted by the United Nations foundation that supports girls growing up in developing countries around the world.

Since sharing an image of a little boy modelling the T-shirt on Instagram fans have been quick to praise the brand for encouraging young boys to discover a greater understanding of gender equality and feminism.

“Good job. Just bought my son a shirt,” one fan wrote. “He has a twin sister and definitely supports her getting the same treatment and rights as him.”

“LOVE THIS SHIRT!!! Well done J.Crew,” another added.

“Good for you @jcrew – you just earned a new family of consumers!! Feminist is not a bad word,” yet another user commented.

Despite the brand receiving plenty of support in favour of the T-shirt, some weren’t so keen on the message J.Crew were trying to promote.

“Poor children … For J.Crew- business, for parents-PR, for children – suffering. Children are always the victims of stupidity of adults,” one critic wrote.

“This is absolutely sickening. Having children being a tool for parents idealogical agenda. Doesn’t matter if it’s facism, anti-fasicm, sovinism or feminism, none of them drive the rights of everyone. This should be illegal,” another added.

“Please leave children out of things like this. This is rubbish,” yet another user wrote.

Others argued that the fact that the T-shirt is proving so controversial could be an indication of its necessity.

“It is beyond crazy that people are upset with this shirt when feminism simply means equal rights,” an Instagram user commented.

“Children should be taught to love and respect all people regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation.”
