Motherhood, one of the most challenging jobs in the world. New mothers are subject to criticism, unsolicited advice and when it comes to breastfeeding it’s flipping minefield.
In a society that uses breasts to advertise almost anything the acceptance of breastfeeding in public has a mighty long way to go. Thankfully, many strong women are paving the way to normalising breastfeeding though public acts of defiance in the face of oppression.
Running a marathon is probably the furthest thing from a new mother’s mind but Anna Young did exactly that and she was a total badass about it. Just five months after giving birth to her daughter she took part in a half marathon in Salt Lake City. When she was eight miles in, it was time to express. So what did she do? She simply whipped out her hand pump carried on running and got to it like a boss.
Young shared her story with Facebook group, Occupy Breastfeeding. Her post read: “I had to leave at 4:30am and the race started at 6:45am. I nursed my daughter before I left my house, pumped after running the first 8 miles and nursed her after I made it past the finish line.”
She credited the group, which champions the right for mothers to breastfeed their children in public, with helping her to: “find a way to run my race and take care of my daughter.”
The internet has been applauding Young for her bravery, and rightly so.
