What is cloud bread? The latest TikTok trend to try at home
Baking has seen a rise in popularity during lockdown, with our social media feeds filled with banana bread and sourdough starters.
If you’re bored of making the same old loaves, you’ll be thankful for the resurrection of cloud bread.
It’s by no means a new invention, but it has recently resurfaced on TikTok after one person’s recipe amassed more than 4 million likes on the popular social media site.
The bread looks pretty normal from the outside, but when you open it up it’s soft, pillowy and bright blue - or whatever food colouring you decide to add - and it’s just the kind of mesmerising recipe we all need during the school holidays.

If you want to make the bread, which gets its name due to its cloud-like consistency, then the TikTok user shares a ‘how to’ with her followers on her account.
As far as bread goes - if you can call it that - it’s really pretty simple.
Start with three egg whites, 10g of cornstarch and 30g of white sugar. You can add vanilla extract for sweetness and food colouring if you fancy a different hue.
Whisk the egg whites until they’re bubbly before adding the cornstarch and white sugar.
If you’re doing this without a scale, the user says: “you can use 2tbsp and a pinch of white sugar and a little less than 1tbsp of cornstarch.”

After everything is combined, you will need to keep whisking until soft peaks form - in a similar manner to the technique you would use with a meringue.
Move it onto a baking tray and create any shape you want before putting it in the oven for 25 minutes at 150C.
The result is a fluffy, airy dessert which seems to divide opinions.
While some people loved it, others described it as tasting like “soggy eggs”.
The verdict is still out, but at the very least it’ll be a fun experiment to try at home.
