Half a glass of wine each day increases breast cancer risk, research finds
Drinking just half a glass of wine every day increases your risk of developing breast cancer, according to new research.
The report from the World Cancer Research Fund has linked alcohol consumption in women to breast cancer, but also backs up research that shows regular intensive exercise can reduce that risk.
To get this information, researchers analysed 119 studies containing data on 12 million women from around the world.
They found that drinking an average of 10g of alcohol a day is associated with a 5% increased breast cancer risk in pre-menopausal women and a 9% increase in post-menopausal women.
Keeping in mind that the average drink contains 14g of alcohol.
They also found that vigorous exercise could get this down, as pre-menopausal women who were the most active had a 17% lower risk of developing breast cancer in comparison to their less-active counterparts while post-menopausal women had a 10% decreased risk.
It’s hardly the first time the two things have been linked – a study last year linked drinking white wine with the development of invasive melanoma in white men and women, while another in the British Medical Journal concluded that even small amounts of alcohol increases the risk of cancer in women and men who smoke.
Though remember there’s a huge number of things that can increase your cancer risk – from your genes to when you first started your period – so it’s a little more complicated than this.
But if you fancy trying to give up alcohol, why not give it a go?
