Gwyneth Paltrow's vagina eggs can cause toxic shock syndrome
We've been terrified of toxic shock syndrome ever since every teen magazine warned us to NEVER LEAVE A TAMPON IN for too long, but now there's a new risk for your precious vagina, and it's being endorsed by Gwyneth Paltrow.
Gwyneth's lifestyle website Goop recently posted about vaginal jade eggs, which are available to buy on the site for £45-£53. A post on the site reads:
"Fans say regular use increases chi, orgasms, vaginal muscle tone, hormonal balance, and feminine energy in general. Shiva Rose has been practicing with them for about seven years, and raves about the results; we tried them, too, and were so convinced we put them into the goop shop."
Since the post went up, people have gone crazy for the eggs - so much so that both types have sold out. However, Dr. Jen Gunter, a Canadian gynaecologist, has since denounced the eggs as dangerous in an open letter to Paltrow.
Gunter argues that jade is a porous material, meaning bacteria is able to cling to it. Once the egg is inserted, the user is at risk of bacterial vaginosis, or even toxic shock syndrome. She writes:
"...The claim that they can balance hormones is, quite simply, biologically impossible. Pelvic floor exercises can help with incontinence and even give stronger orgasms for some women, but they cannot change hormones. As for female energy? I'm a gynecologist and I don't know what that is!? How does one test for it?
"For women who want to use a device to help with Kegel exercises I suggest using weights made with medical grade silicone or plastic and to not wear them for long periods of time. Kegel exercises are not just about the contraction, the relaxation phase is just as important."
We'll probably give this one a miss then, thanks Gwynnie.
