Gigi and Bella Hadid's nude British Vogue shoot makes for uncomfortable viewing

Gigi and Bella Hadid have shed their clothes and posed for the March 2018 of British Vogue together, nude.

The image, shared by the magazine’s editor Edward Enninful on Instagram and photographed by legendary fashion photographer Steven Meisel, shows the pair intertwined, with wet look hair and sans clothes.

But while some readers have rushed to praise the image, others have admitted to finding it uncomfortable viewing.

“Would you have 2 brothers posing like this?” One person said.

Another highlighted the nude element of the photo, saying, “I’ve been enjoying your work, but i feel compelled to say that this makes me uncomfortable. Please be responsible with your treatment of women’s bodies in the media, as a gentleman with power over their representation. I get you need to sell magazines, but Vogue isn’t an icky lads’ mag.”

“Umm… can we just please not deny that this is weird. Sisters don’t sit like this.” Others said.

The reaction on Twitter followed suit, with some saying they felt the sisters were slightly too close.

But others pointed out it was standard practise for models, and the fact that Gigi and Bella are sisters probably made things even easier.

Bella and Gigi’s cover shoots also garnered some criticism.

March’s issue of the magazine features two covers, one with each Hadid sister. With comments like “Amazing”, “Love her!” and “Can’t even deal! Wow” the reaction to the girls themselves was overwhelmingly positive.

Their solo cover shots show both sisters wearing gold chainmail Versace gowns, with styling by Joe McKenna, hair by Guido Palau and makeup by Vogue’s new beauty editor-at-large, Pat McGrath.

But some criticised the Enninful for a lack of diversity on the covers, after he famously said “My Vogue is about being inclusive, it’s about diversity” after taking over from Alexandra Shulman.

Notably, five of six of his British Vogue cover stars so far have featured cisgender, slim, white women.

One commenter said: “They’ve dominated fashion and its covers so quickly but what about models of colour blatantly having to wait so much longer even for a shared cover? Look how long Jourdan had to wait for her British Vogue cover. It’s a process I understand and sales have to be made, I guess, but I do hope this is going to be fair in the long run.”

“How does this differ from all the other vogues out there or even the old British Vogue? Same overused white girls that are currently in tons of other covers” another added.

Gigi and Bella appeared together in June 2015 for the Autumn/Winter issue of V Magazine, but this is the first time they’ve appeared together on different covers for the same magazine issue.

Putting siblings on a magazine cover still does not seem to be a popular choice for editors, but notable examples in the past include the Olsen twins on Vogue’s 2011 Best Dressed issue and Willow and Jaden Smith for Interview Magazine in September 2016.
