Five Years Trooping The Colour: The Duchess Of Cambridge’s Ceremonial Style File
This weekend, the Duchess of Cambridge will attend her sixth Trooping the Colour ceremony as part of the Queen’s official 90th birthday celebrations. It’s a dressy event, with Wills and Harry dusting off their military attire for the occasion and Kate donning a large hat of some description.
Over the years, she’s worn a myriad of British high-end labels, including Alexander McQueen, Erdem and Catherine Walker, cementing her status as a royal style force to be reckoned with.
Kate experienced her very first Trooping the Colour just a couple of months after her marriage to Prince William. After riding in the ceremony’s procession with Camilla and Harry, she joined the royal family on the balcony of Buckingham Palace to watch the Royal Air Force’s display.
For the occasion, she showed off her sartorial prowess in a crisp, white Alexander McQueen coat, boasting a peplum waist and pleated skirt. Back in 2011, you could snap up the Duchess’ ensemble from Net-A-Porter for around £2,290. She paired the coat dress with a Sylvia Fletcher for Lock & Co hat and Kiki McDonough Grace earrings.
In 2012, Kate turned to British/Canadian designer Erdem for her ceremonial get-up. The label created Kate a bespoke design, boasting a distinctive rolled and scooped neckline and pale embroidered flowers.
She opted for a hat by milliner Jane Corbett and held a simple grey suede clutch, thought to be by Alexander McQueen. The look was completed with Links of London Bubble Stiletto earrings.
Heavily pregnant with Prince George in 2013, the Duchess bought a touch of femininity to the proceedings in a pale pink coat dress adorned with statement pearl buttons and an oversized collar.
The coat, another Alexander McQueen piece, was believed to be a custom made maternity number for the royal.
The Jane Corbett hat had, however, been seen on the Duchess before. She wore it to the Queen’s garden party in 2012.
The following year, the Duchess donned a very classic ensemble: A brand new light blue jacket and skirt combo by Alexander McQueen and a matching hat by milliner Jane Taylor.
In 2015, Kate wore the “Astrid” coat from Catherine Walker - one of the late Princess Diana’s favourite designers. Featuring a contemporary pencil line and a neat rounded collar, the sharply tailored piece was made from a textured woven ivory and blue silk.
On her head, the Duchess wore a bespoke version of the Marisabel hat, made by Sylvia Fletcher for Lock & Co.
