Outrage after stylist says people over 60kg (9.4 stone) shouldn’t attend fashion shows

Malaysian fashion critic Zaihani Mohd Zain has been met with outrage after suggesting people weighing more than 60kg (that’s 9.4 stone) should not be allowed to attend fashion shows.
The stylist and image consultant, who is well-known in Malaysia’s fashion circles, made the comments in a Facebook post which has now been deleted.
First reported by Malay Mail, Zain suggested people over 9.4 stone should skip fashion shows because “Your thighs are spilling over onto the chairs on your left and right.”

Zain’s comments have been met with uproar from fashion lovers and industry names, with many saying her comments are ‘fat-shaming’.
One Twitter user said: “It’s 2018. There’s nothing wrong with plus size (or any size for that matter) attending fashion events.”

Kuala Lumpur-based fashion designer Datuk Tom Abang Saufi shared her disgust at the comments, posting a telling montage of industry heavyweights sitting side-by-side with fellow guests of all shapes and sizes.
In a world of growing inclusivity (particularly in fashion) it’s crazy to think views like this still exist.

Since the backlash, Zain has apologised for her comments.
The critic also claimed her comments were simply meant to air her frustration at a guest beside her who was ‘manspreading’.
“He was actually manspreading throughout the evening and that action had made me uncomfortable when his leg was brushing against mine during the show,” she said in a news report.
“Unfortunately, I didn’t know that it was called ‘manspreading’ and had wrongly described the situation, which led to people misconstruing my statement.”
