Is there anything wrong with getting naked in a public changing room?

A woman has sparked a debate about public nudity after taking to the Internet to ask if it’s ever ok to go completely nude in a changing room.

When it comes to getting changed in a busy dressing room people tend to fall into two distinct camps. While some of us will shy away in a private cubicle, hide their modesty under a towel and are horrified by so much as a boob reveal, others will happily go completely starkers!

And it was a woman who fell into the latter go-nude camp that sparked the initial online debate.

Taking to Mumsnet one user explained that on a trip to a spa the woman changing next to her had made her feel awkward because she stripped off completely nude as she herself tried to protect her modesty under her towel.

“While getting changed for lunch a woman came out of the showers and stood around for about 5 minutes having a chat/getting in my way – right next to me completely starkers!” she wrote.

“I wouldn’t mind her just getting changed but she didn’t, she had a towel round her head and her full bush and boobs out, she wasn’t even facing the lockers, it was like she was just parading in my face,” the woman continued.

The mum went on to say that though she has no problem with nakedness in changing rooms, she felt it crossed the line to be standing around making others feel awkward.

And Mumsnet users were quick to offer their opinion on the thorny subject.

Some people were sympathetic to the original poster’s views that in this case the nakedness had been excessive.

“I so totally agree,” one women wrote. “I don’t want to stare at my naked body in all its glory, I sure don’t want yours in my face either.”

“Pet hate of mine is when someone naked apart from head towel and flip flops puts a leg up on bench and bends over to moisturise,” another woman agreed.

“It’s called modesty, and like you say she wasn’t changing so the amount of time spent naked (essentially in public) was excessive and unusual,” another poster wrote.

“It’s so gross when they go and sit their bare ass on a bench too,” another women agreed.

But others couldn’t see why the original poster was so worked up about the issue.

“They were getting changed… in a changing room,” one woman wrote. “It’s your problem. 5 mins of nakedness is hardly gratuitous flashing.”

“What’s the big deal?” added another. “It’s just breasts and genitals, like any other female mammal!”

“Just because you were trying to dress under a towel doesn’t mean everyone else should be trying to hide themselves,” another woman added.

“How dare women walk around with their natural body shapes and hair in view of other women. Obviously we should all cover up for fear of frightening other females with our pubic hair,” another woman wrote sarcastically.

Other users pointed out that we should all try to feel more comfortable with being naked.

“I think it’s a shame we’re all so embarrassed by the human body!” one woman wrote. “It’s the one thing we all have in common, yet we feel the need to cover up. I kind of wish we could all feel as confident as this lady in a women only environment (I’m not!) it must be really liberating to not be embarrassed about your body.”

What do you think? Do we get too worked up about public nudity? Or is there a line (or towel) we should be hiding behind?
