Drinking two cups of coffee a day could boost male fertility, research suggests
Couples could increase their chances of conceiving a baby if men drink just two cups of coffee a day, a study has revealed.
For many of us coffee is literally the elixir of life. But while we credit a caffeine hit for helping us get through the day, there’s a more surprising benefit to our daily cup of the brown stuff – a fertility boost.
Researchers analysed 500 couples trying for a baby to investigate the potential impact caffeine could have on fertility.
The results, presented a the American Society for Reproductive Medicine conference in Denver, revealed that the right level of caffeine intake in men consumed the week before a couple had sex appeared to double the chance of pregnancy.
In this case, the optimal number of cups of coffee a day was found to be two.
The findings contradict previous research which suggested that coffee may damage male sperm and hinder a couple’s chances of conception.
Dr Sunni Mumford, lead author of study from the US National Institutes of Health, said, according to The Telegraph: “We were somewhat surprised by the results though the research on male caffeine intake and its effects on fertility is pretty mixed.
“These results highlight the importance of lifestyle factors in both male and female partners during sensitive windows of reproduction to influence fecundability, and the need for appropriate preconception guidance for couples seeking pregnancy.”
The study also found that women who drank one alcoholic drink every other day were 26 per cent less likely to conceive.
It isn’t the first time that the potential health benefits have been discussed.
Last year it was revealed that people who chug up to seven cups of the brown stuff a day can significantly cut their chances of an early death.
Meanwhile previous study presented at the European Cardiac Society Congress 2017 found that guzzling lots of the stuff could have a significant impact on our life expectancy.
While a further study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine has revealed that besides making us feel a little wired, drinking three cups of coffee a day could help us live longer too.
But it’s not ALL good news on the coffee front.
While many of us can’t even muster up a ‘morning’ let alone start the day until we’ve had our go-to cup of the black stuff, according to one expert reaching for caffeine first thing will only make us more tired.
And it could hinder our attempts at shifting a few pounds too. While it’s tempting to believe that because it gets your heart racing and adrenaline pumping, drinking coffee could help you lose weight, according to a new study published in the Journal Of Food Science, it could do the total opposite by making you crave sweet foods.
