Dove’s New Hair Campaign Is All Kinds Of Empowering

You know the Dove campaign drill. The beauty company prides itself on uplifting adverts tackling heart-tugging topics like body-image and self-esteem. Well now the brand has turned its attention to another topic that can have a serious effect on confidence…hair. Because believe it or not hair-shaming is a thing.
The #LoveYourHair, initiative is designed to urge women of different shapes, sizes and races to love their hair, no matter it’s type or style. It features a video of six women getting real about hair and detailing how the pressure they’ve felt to style their hair a certain way has affected their confidence.
“I grew up thinking I couldn’t be blonde because Asians just didn’t do that,” says one woman in the video.
“A friend once told me if I put color back in my hair it would make me look better,” explained another.

The campaign comes on the back of research commissioned by Dove, which found that 86% of women believe society and media has put immense pressure on them to look a certain way. While at the same time only 11% of women love everything about their hair and wouldn’t change anything about it.
This isn’t the first time Dove has encouraged people to embrace their hair. Last year, they launched a #LoveYourCurls campaign, even dedicating an entire emoji keyboard to curly-haired girls. Following the campaign it was reported by the brand that there was a 20% drop in women hating on their hair on social media.
Anything that inspires women to embrace their individuality has got to be a good thing. Props to Dove for pushing the conversation forward and inspiring women to define their own beauty.
