Donald Trump just made it harder for women to get equal pay - and Ivanka Trump supports it

It’s clear that the Trump administration has little care for women’s equality. But the latest rule to be overturned by Donald Trump is rather worrying.

When Barack Obama was in power, he set in place a rule that aimed to close the gender pay gap once and for all.

Set to take effect next spring, it required companies with over 100 employees to record how much they pay their staff, noting down each person’s gender and ethnicity.

These results would then be reported to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) who would then investigate the companies that appeared to be supporting pay discrimination.

This week, the White House announced that it will suspend the rule, claiming the additional paperwork would be “enormously burdensome” on employers.

“We don’t believe it would actually help us gather information about wage and employment discrimination,” Neomi Rao of the White House’s Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs told the Wall Street Journal.

Aside from the fact that it’s hugely burdensome for women to earn less than their male counterparts, the most shocking thing about this suspension is that Ivanka Trump – supposed supporter of women’s equality – is in favour of it.

“Ultimately, while I believe the intention was good and agree that pay transparency is important, the proposed policy would not yield the intended results,” the First Daughter said in a statement.

Several prominent organisations have spoken out against the ruling – especially after EEOC chairwoman Jenny Yang’s 2016 statement which read that the new workplace data would in fact help tackle the gender pay gap.

The National Women’s Law Centre called it “a clear message to employers that if you want to ignore pay inequities and sweep them under the rug, this administration has your back.”

“This is not a technical tweak as they would have you believe,” spokesperson Fatima Goss Graves said in a statement. “Make no mistake – it’s an all-out attack on equal pay.”

People on Twitter have also criticised the decision, reminding women who voted for Trump that the president doesn’t care about them.
