A mother tired of buying new toilet brushes every six months has divided the Internet after suggesting a unique way to keep the bathroom device clean.

The anonymous woman took to Mumsnet to ask: “Would it be absolutely disgusting to put loo brushes in the dishwasher on their own (on a hot setting) followed by a hot wash on empty?”

But the innocent query promptly divided the Internet forum, as fellow parents took to the digital platform to voice their opinion.

One user simply replied, “That is disgusting!”

While another agreed, adding: “Why would you need your loo brush to be that clean when it just gets used to clean a loo? Why would your risk contaminating your food area for it? I can’t fathom what your thinking is here?!”

In defence of her idea, the mother explained that she is “sick to death of how easily we just discard plastic” and hopes that washing the toilet brush could help the environment.

But the thought process behind the suggestion didn’t go down particularly well with fellow Mumsnet users, as one asked: “Just wondering how much all that hot water/electricity/detergent would compare financially and environmentally to getting some cheap new loo brushes?”

However, it seems there are parents out there who already reuse their toilet brush regularly.

“Of course it’s fine,” one wrote. “Dishwashers temperature is set to kill all bugs. I wouldn’t and don’t even do a hot wash afterwards.”

Another agreed, commenting: “I do my four loo brushes, pots they go in, pots they stand on (it’s a whole contraption) every month in the dishwasher. It’s a full load, wouldn’t put anything else in with them.”
